This Day In Music - We remember the King of Pop, Michael Jackson!
This Day In Music, June 25th, saw the passing of a legend.
He may have been gone for four years but his voice still echoes around the world. He broke records, topped charts and crumbled racial divides. Who am I talking about? The only King of Pop:
Let’s do this.
MJ started out in ‘The Jackson 5’ in 1964 and was already making a star solo career for himself by 1971.
He came, he saw, he popped. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes him as the most successful entertainer of all time and you don’t find anyone arguing with that fact. His songs are a part of all our lives and you find them playing in every corner of the world to this day. The album ‘Thriller’ is the best selling album of all time and the rest of his work broke records as well. The man was a genius and genius cannot be contained. His videos like ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Black or White’ made everyone want to move and spurned the racial divide. Of course, he famously changed his skin colour in later years.
MJ changed the world of music and dance, famously making the ‘Moonwalk’ and ‘Robot’ moves a craze around the world. His songs left the world in a fever for more, everyone was singing ‘Bad’, applauding his marriage to Lisa Presely, following its’ demise, pouring out in crowds for his tours, raving over his eccentric costumes and copying his intricate dance sequences. For a while, the music industry WAS Michael Jackson and Michael Jackson alone. He went through his years winning Grammys, AMAs, passing through crowds of adoring fans and even managing to father three children.
His death on the 25th of June, 2009, sent the world into waves of shock and grief. Twitter and Wikipedia crashed, TMZ suffered an outage and the world of music plunged into depression.
His mark is on the world and music will never be the same. His songs will run through the veins of many generations and many places like the Phillips Center and the Rio Hotel are hosting tributes to the man this month, titled MJ Live!, ‘The Ultimate Thriller’ and ‘The Michael Jackson Tribute Concert’.
The world is paying homage to the legend who will never be replaced.
